A COLLECTION OF 29 TRADITIONAL ANTIQUE SICKLES FOR HARVESTING RICE
Cambodia, Early 20th century
Wood, buffalo or ox horn, iron
These graceful, elegant objects are reminiscent of herons or egrets in flight; perhaps as they were observed by rice-farmers working in their paddy-fields. The curved horn or wooden part was used to gather a handful of rice plants and then, with a flick of the wrist, the sheaf was cut with the iron blade.
They work beautifully as individual sculptures or as a group.Provenance: Private German collection.
