ST862 PAIR OF GILT-COPPER REPOUSSÉ PLAQUES

A delightful pair of gilded and painted repoussé copper plaques, once part of a larger shrine, each depicting a seated Buddha against a red background, his hands raised in dharmachakramudra (the gesture of ‘turning the wheel of the law’), with slightly differing mandorlas and surrounded by scrolling foliage

These images refer to the Buddha’s first sermon at Sarnath.
