G692.2 A LARGE LACQUERED AND INLAID WOOD SEATED BUDDHA

BURMA, TAI YAI (SHAN STATES)

18TH -19TH CENTURY

H. 113 CMS, 44 ½ INS

An extremely large and spectacular gilded and mirror-inlaid wood Buddha, crowned and jewelled and seated on a tiered pedestal in vajrasana, the right hand lowered in bhumisparsimudra (the gesture of summoning the earth to witness) and the left resting in his lap, the face meditative and serene beneath deeply arched brows and a diadem enclosing a lotus finial, the reverse of the base with a relic chamber.
